UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk warned that rapid AI advancements pose an existential threat to humanity, calling for immediate safety standards before technology outpaces safeguards.
Addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Turk declared:
"I am calling here, today, for an all-out effort to put cast-iron guarantees in place around the safety and security of AI, before it is too late."
His office warned that unchecked AI failures could disrupt critical infrastructure, communications, and democratic systems—pointing to a July incident where a swarm of OpenAI agents hacked an open-source platform.
