Cancer rates in adults under 55 have been steadily climbing. New research led by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis suggests that faster biological aging in recent generations may be a key factor driving this trend.
The study, published in Nature Medicine, analyzed data from over 154,000 UK Biobank participants and 10,000 U.S. participants in the NIH All of Us Research Program.
Key Findings
- Generational Shifts: Younger cohorts show significantly higher systemic biological aging than earlier generations did at the exact same chronological age.
- Higher Cancer Risk: Individuals with the highest rate of biological aging had a 15% higher risk of developing early-onset solid tumors—particularly lung, gastrointestinal, and uterine cancers.
- Organ-Specific Links: Aging in specific tissues correlated with specific risks: an older-appearing immune system was linked to early-onset lung cancer, while accelerated aging in fat tissue was linked to early-onset colorectal cancer.

While lifestyle factors like diet, alcohol, and obesity contribute to early cancer, no single habit explains the overall surge. Measuring biological age captures how lifestyle and environmental stressors accumulate over time, offering doctors a potential tool to spot high-risk young adults early and deliver targeted screening.
