The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), representing about 90% of banking sector employees, has announced a three-day strike starting September 28. One of their main demands is the implementation of a five-day work week.
The strike follows the Finance Ministry's reported refusal to provide any commitment or formal assurance on adopting a five-day banking week. Bank unions have advocated for changes to work schedules and improved employee welfare, arguing that a five-day week would enhance work-life balance.
The government has clarified that no commitment was made by the Finance Ministry. Given UFBU's large representation of the banking workforce, the strike could disrupt banking operations and services nationwide. This underscores ongoing disagreements between employee unions and authorities over working conditions and operational policies.
