The ₹23,731-crore GOBARdhan scheme targets a tenfold increase in compressed biogas (CBG) production, aiming to raise output from 0.4 million to 4–6 million standard cubic metres per day. Announced by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the initiative offers capital assistance and guarantees the purchase of up to 100% of eligible CBG output. This support encourages investment in producing biogas from agricultural residue, animal dung, food waste, and other organic materials.

The scheme is projected to save over ₹40,000 crore in fuel imports, contribute more than ₹75,000 crore to India’s GDP, and generate over 150,000 jobs. It also aims to replace roughly 10 million tonnes of fossil fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 40 million tonnes.

Additionally, GOBARdhan plans to produce approximately 250 million tonnes of organic manure for farmers. By promoting waste management, clean energy, and rural economic growth, the initiative aligns with the government’s goal to increase natural gas's share in India’s energy mix from 6–7% to 15% by 2030.
