India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded 145 billion transactions during April–September, marking a 27% increase from 114 billion in the same period last year. Total transaction value rose 20% to ₹177 lakh crore from ₹148 lakh crore, according to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
In September, transaction volume decreased by 1.7% to 24.07 billion, while transaction value fell 1.5% to ₹29.37 lakh crore compared with August. However, average daily transactions rose to 802 million from 791 million, partly offsetting concerns over the monthly decline.
This growth in first-half transactions underscores UPI’s expanding role in India’s digital payment ecosystem. The figures come ahead of the planned implementation of merchant discount rate (MDR) charges on high-value merchant payments.
