Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that all toll booths on national highways will become barrier-free by March 2027. This initiative seeks to improve traffic flow and reduce delays at toll plazas across the country.

The minister highlighted that full implementation of FASTag, an electronic toll collection system, is expected to benefit the government by generating ₹25,000 crore annually. This system ensures faster toll transactions by eliminating cash payments and physical barriers.

Barrier-free toll plazas will facilitate seamless vehicle movement, lowering congestion and fuel consumption. The shift aligns with the government’s digital India and infrastructure development goals.

The move is anticipated to enhance the operational efficiency of National Highways, improving the overall travel experience for commuters and freight transporters alike.
