Dibrugarh: Worsening floods in Upper Assam have severely disrupted both road and rail connectivity after rising water levels inundated sections of National Highway-37 (NH-715) near Teok and submerged railway tracks near Simaluguri in Sivasagar district.
The flooding brought traffic on the Guwahati–Dibrugarh highway to a near standstill, leaving long queues of trucks, buses and private vehicles stranded for several kilometres. The affected highway serves as a vital transport corridor connecting Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. Authorities have diverted vehicles travelling towards Dibrugarh via Tezpur, Biswanath Chariali and the Bogibeel Bridge until water levels recede.
Rail services have also been hit after the Dikhow River overflowed, inundating the Simaluguri railway yard and adjoining tracks. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) suspended train movement on affected sections, evacuated more than 2,000 passengers by road, cancelled nine local trains, and diverted or short-terminated several long-distance services, including the Rajdhani Express, Vivek Express, Kamrup Express, and Nagaland Express.
NFR has deployed help desks, arranged food, drinking water, ticket refunds and special trains for stranded passengers, while authorities have urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel as heavy rainfall continues across the region.
