New Delhi: Security was heightened around the Parliament complex on Monday as protesters participating in the Chalo Sansad (CJP) March attempted to move towards the high-security zone during the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi left Parliament amid the heightened security arrangements.
Authorities closed several Parliament entry gates and deployed the Rapid Action Force (RAF), riot-control units and additional police personnel across central Delhi. Protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar, with some attempting to advance despite restrictions on marching towards Parliament. Police responded with tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd.
The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging examination irregularities. The agitation has also drawn attention to activist Sonam Wangchuk's prolonged hunger strike.
