Azara Police produced 26-year-old Ashique Ali before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Guwahati on September 28, 2026, in connection with the death of 22-year-old Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria. Thakuria’s body was recovered from a homestay in the Dharapur-Garal area on September 26. Following a complaint lodged by the victim's family, police registered a case at Azara Police Station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections covering murder, gang rape, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and wrongful confinement.
Investigators have also detained Mitu Ali, an employee at the homestay where Thakuria and Ashique Ali were staying. According to initial reports, Mitu allegedly supplied liquor to the room during their stay, a claim authorities are actively examining as part of the broader inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death. The victim’s family stated that she called her mother around 2:00 a.m. alleging physical assault before her phone disconnected. Police have sealed the homestay and questioned the facility's owner as post-mortem findings and forensic reports remain pending.
