In Brief:

  1. Auqib Nabi replaces Jasprit Bumrah for India’s Test series against Sri Lanka.
  2. Bumrah’s absence due to a knee injury is a major setback for the bowling unit.
  3. The upcoming fixture is critical to India’s World Test Championship final qualification.

India’s cricket team has announced an update to its squad for the upcoming Test tour against Sri Lanka, with Jammu & Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi stepping in to replace the injured Jasprit Bumrah. The decision comes after Bumrah failed to recover fully from a left knee injury sustained during the ODI series against England, ruling him out of a tour vital to India’s campaign in the World Test Championship.

The absence of Bumrah—India’s premier fast bowler—poses a significant challenge for the pace attack. Nabi, who earned his maiden call-up to the senior national side after picking up 104 wickets over the last two Ranji Trophy seasons and impressing on a recent India A tour, joins the squad to strengthen the bowling unit.

With World Test Championship qualification on the line, the two-match Test series starting August 15 holds added importance. The team, led by Shubman Gill, will need to adapt quickly and maintain consistent performances to keep their championship final hopes alive.
