Following severe floods in Upper Assam triggered by a cloudburst in Nagaland's Mon district on 19 July, a rapid needs assessment is underway in the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. The floods have inundated hundreds of villages, affecting the Disang, Dikhow, Jhanji, Bhogdoi, Kakodonga, Dhansiri rivers, along with their tributaries, across the region.
Assessment teams are conducting detailed surveys and consultations to measure damage to housing, agriculture, livestock, infrastructure, and livelihoods. They are also assessing displacement and access to essential services, including safe drinking water, sanitation, food security, shelter, healthcare, and protection, while prioritizing vulnerable groups such as children, women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
Insights from the assessment will inform relief operations, identify gaps in existing responses, and assist coordinated humanitarian aid. The North-East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS), in collaboration with local communities and authorities, is spearheading the initiative to strengthen flood response efforts in Upper Assam.
