For 25 years, the consensus in cosmology has been that dark energy is driving the universe to expand at an accelerating rate. Now, a study from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the University of Oxford suggests cosmic expansion might actually be slowing down.

- Stellar Age Matters: Analyzing data from over 1,700 Type Ia supernovae revealed that their brightness depends on the age of their parent stars. Factoring this in shifts the data from showing cosmic acceleration to showing a gradual deceleration.
- Directional Shift: The apparent acceleration seems linked to the movement of our local galaxy group and fades with distance. Because dark energy should push uniformly in all directions, this directional effect undermines the dark energy theory.
The Debate Remains Open
Not all astrophysicists agree. A companion paper published in the same journal issue argues that current observational data still firmly supports an accelerating universe.
Upcoming surveys, such as those from the Rubin Observatory, will soon examine hundreds of thousands of supernovae to help settle whether dark energy is real or an illusion.
