Speaking at an industry event in New Delhi on September 23, 2026, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari confirmed the upcoming October launch of Toyota's 100% flex-fuel Innova. The vehicle operates entirely on bio-ethanol and generates 60% of its own electricity during operation. Addressing concerns regarding E20 fuel blends, Gadkari stated that 19 nations currently utilize ethanol fuel blends, and Indian transport authorities have recorded no verified technical complaints regarding engine damage from ethanol-blended petrol.
The initiative aligns with India's broader biofuel expansion strategy aimed at lowering reliance on fossil fuel imports, which currently account for a ₹22-lakh-crore market. Government data confirms that shifting to ethanol production from maize and sugarcane generated ₹45,000 crore in direct revenue for agricultural producers across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Following Maruti Suzuki's introduction of its first flex-fuel passenger car prototype in June, Toyota's October launch represents the first commercial rollout of a 100% flex-fuel passenger vehicle in the country.
