India has officially achieved its target of obtaining 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, accomplishing the milestone five years ahead of the set 2030 deadline.
The announcement was made in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, Shripad Yesso Naik on Wednesday July 22, 2026, in response to a parliamentary question raised by Cuddalore MP M. Vishnu Prasad.
As of June 30, 2026, India's total installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity reached 297.36 GW, with total renewable energy capacity standing at 288.58 GW.
